ß-hydroxy-ß-methylbutyrate for use in the treatment of allergies in an individual suffering from or at risk of developing allergies, by administering to the individual an effective amount of said ß-hydroxy-ß-methylbutyrate to modulate an imbalance in the production of type 1 and type 2 cytokines, where the ratio of levels of type 1 cytokine to type 2 cytokine is enhanced by the administration of β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate.
