The present invention relates to a method for managing an engine failure on a rotary wing aircraft (1) comprising a hybrid power plant (5) provided with at least two heat engines (13, 13 '), at least one electric machine (12) and a main power gearbox (11). Said aircraft (1) also comprises means for storing (14) electrical energy and a main rotor (2) mechanically linked to said hybrid power plant (5). According to said method, the operation of said heat engines (13, 13 ') is monitored during each flight in order to detect a failure of one of them, and then when a failure of one of said heat engines (13, 13') ) is detected, said electric machine (12) is controlled to supply, if necessary, an auxiliary power W e in order to avoid the occurrence of a deficit of the total power WT of said hybrid power plant (5), thereby allowing the pilot said aircraft (1) to safely maneuver said aircraft (1) without degrading said hybrid power plant (5).
