The present invention provides aqueous urea formaldehyde resin (UF resin)compositions having a pH or 7.0 or more, preferably, 8.5 or more, andcomprisingthe UF resin modified with from 2.5 to 15 wt.%, of at least one ammonia orvolatileamine neutralized carboxylic acid group containing solution polymer or alkalisolubleemulsion polymer modifier, based on total UF resin and polymer solids, whereinthepolymer modifier is the reaction product of 30 to 100 wt.% of methacrylicacid, acrylicacid, maleic anhydride, a salt thereof, or mixtures thereof, wherein thesolutionpolymer has a weight average molecular weight of from 2,000 to 16,000 and thealkali soluble emulsion copolymer has a weight average molecular weight offrom1,500 to 20,000.
