Compounds of general formula I, II, III and IV: Formula (I) wherein the variables have the meaning given in the description, and a process for the preparation of compounds of general formula I, II, III and IV are disclosed. The use of the compounds of general formulae II, III and IV each prepared according to the abovementioned processes and of compounds of general formulae II, III and IV per se for the preparation of dye-sensitized solar cells; and such dye-sensitized solar cells per se are disclosed.
