A physical implementation of a recurrent neural network is disclosed, which comprises of a reservoir computing medium, magnetic resonance imaging device and a computing/storage device. An inhomogeneous gel substance located in a magnetic resonance imaging device, acoustic wave generators connected to the gel and the magnetic gradients in the magnetic resonance imaging device act as the physical reservoir of computation. The input is encoded in the generated acoustic and magnetic waves, and wave interactions provide the nonlinear operations for computation. The nonlinear output of the reservoir is read out by the MR imaging device. The inhomogeneous gel is prepared via an unsupervised annealing procedure that optimizes the representation of the reservoir medium for a specific dataset.
