A hybrid vehicle and a control method therefor detects malfunction of a fuel amount detector by accumulating a running distance (S110, S170), by detecting the amount of change of fuel amount (S120, S180), by estimating an amount of fuel for the accumulated the running distance (S130, 190) and by comparing the detected amount with the estimated amount. When the absolute value of the difference between the detected and estimated amounts is larger than a specified value ((Y1), S150, (Y2), S210), a malfunction of the fuel amount detector is determined (S160, S220). Depending on a selectable mode of the hybrid vehicle (hybrid mode, electric mode (S100)), different malfunction determinations with different specified values (Y1,Y2) are used.
