A compacting roller 10 for a head for laying fibres preimpregnated with thermoplastic resin consists of a cylinder having an external diameter D1, a length E and comprising, along one axis of the cylinder, an axial recess of diameter D2. Moreover, the roller is formed from a material having a compressive strength greater than or equal to 20 N/mm² between a temperature of 0°C and a temperature of 500°C and an optical absorption coefficient of less than 0.2/m, at a temperature between 0°C and 500°C, in at least one range of wavelengths that is compatible with an emission from a heat capacity laser. Advantageously, the material of the roller moreover has a thermal diffusivity coefficient greater than or equal to 10E‑5 m²/s, preferably greater than 10E‑4 m²/s and/or a thermal conductivity coefficient greater than or equal to 50 W/m.K, and/or a thermal expansion coefficient less than or equal to 10E‑5 per Kelvin and/or a porosity of less than or equal to 0.5%.
