A method for preparing a magnesium-based hydrogen storage material, comprising: 1. a Mg-Ce-Ni system amorphous alloy is prepared via a rapid cooling method; 2. the amorphous alloy acquired is crushed to acquire an amorphous powder; 3. the amorphous alloy is activated to acquire a MgH₂-Mg₂NiH₄-CeH_2.73 system nanocrystalline composite; 4. the composite acquired is subjected to a hydrogen adsorption and desorption cycle, and then the composite is placed in a pure Ar environment for passivation; 5. finally, the passivized composite is subjected to oxidization to acquire a MgH₂-Mg₂NiH4-CeH_2.73-CeO₂ system nanocrystalline composite.
