A method for preparing a magnesium-based hydrogen storage material, comprising: 1. a Mg-Ce-Ni system amorphous alloy is prepared via a rapid cooling method; 2. the amorphous alloy acquired is crushed to acquire an amorphous powder; 3. the amorphous alloy is activated to acquire a MgH2-Mg2NiH4-CeH2.73 system nanocrystalline composite; 4. the composite acquired is subjected to a hydrogen adsorption and desorption cycle, and then the composite is placed in a pure Ar environment for passivation; 5. finally, the passivized composite is subjected to oxidization to acquire a MgH2-Mg2NiH4-CeH2.73-CeO2 system nanocrystalline composite.
