An imaging device (100) contains an imaging unit (104), a face detection unit (1201), an object detection unit (1202), a separate photographic subject determination unit (1205), a cutout position setting unit (1206), and an image processing unit (1207). The imaging unit (104) acquires image data by imaging. The face detection unit (1201) detects a face. The object detection unit (1202) detects an object in order to determine the direction that the face is deemed to be observing. The separate photographic subject determination unit (1205) determines the presence or absence of a separate photographic subject that may be present in the direction that the face is deemed to be observing. If it was determined that a separate photographic subject is present, the cutout position setting unit (1206) sets a trimming area so that the face and the separate photographic subject are arranged in a screen. Meanwhile, if it was determined that a separate photographic subject is not present, the cutout position setting unit (1206) sets the trimming area so that the face is arranged within the screen in a manner such that a space is located in the extension of the direction in the image data in which the face is deemed to be observing.
