The method involves providing a gas discharge section (20) between an input (15) and a reference potential (M) as a stage. A diode section (22) between an output (16) and the reference potential is provided as another stage. A decoupling inductor (18) is connected between the input and the output. Secondary voltage (US) is measured in a secondary inductor (24), which is in an inductive effect connection with the decoupling inductor. The secondary voltage is evaluated regarding overvoltage events in an overvoltage protection apparatus (10). An independent claim is also included for an overvoltage protection apparatus.
