Disclosed are a method for realizing picture-in-picture playing and a picture-in-picture playing device, which relate to the field of communications and solve the problem that plenty of scheduling requests are generated and server burden is aggravated if a user intends to preview live content while conducting the time-shifting playback of a watched live video. The method comprises: obtaining a trigger instruction for the picture-in-picture playing function and recording the current playing progress of a multimedia file; sending the trigger instruction to a scheduling server; receiving a message about available picture-in-picture playing modes indicated by the scheduling server; according to a preset rule, determining the picture-in-picture playing mode that needs to be used among the available picture-in-picture playing modes; creating a picture-in-picture playing window according to preset configuration parameters for the picture-in-picture playing window, and accordingly, on the basis of the recorded playing progress, playing the multimedia file in the picture-in-picture playing window by employing the picture-in-picture playing mode that needs to be used.
