The invention relates to a device (200) for monitoring the change in shape of an area of a structure (100). The device (200) comprises a first optical fiber (210) to be provided in the area of the structure (100), and an optical measurement system (220) configured to carry out, along said portion of the first optical fiber (210), a Brillouin measurement in order to determine the change in shape of said portion of the first optical fiber (210). The first optical fiber (210) comprises nitrogen as a fiber core doping element. The invention also relates to the use of an optical fiber to monitor an area of a structure, to a method for monitoring an area of a structure, and to a structure. Said structure is irradiated or capable of being irradiated.
