Disclosed are a method for automatically blocking high temperature/high current to which metal-insulator transition (MIT) technology is applied, and a switch using the method. A method for operating an automatic high temperature/high current blocking switch on the basis of an MIT element comprises: a step for calculating field effect transistor (FET) voltage applied to the FET on the basis of the resistance of a critical temperature switch (CTS) and reference resistance; a step for comparing the level of the FET voltage and the level of a threshold voltage; a step for determining the FET to be in an "on" state if the FET voltage is greater than the threshold voltage; and a step for determining the FET to be in an "off" state if the FET voltage is less than the threshold voltage, wherein the CTS is a switch implemented on the basis of the MIT element, and the MIT element may be an element which has metallic characteristics within only a certain temperature range.
