A method and apparatus for cataloguing displayable data items within a catalogue is disclosed in which at least a part of the content of the data item is displayed in an area on a display, a user selection of the data item is received as a selection of a position on the display within the area, a user selection indicator is displayed to confirm the user selection, a user input is received to move the user selection indicator across the display within said area to a navigation area within said area, and a plurality of catalogue indicators are displayed in the navigation area, the catalogue indicators representing catalogue locations within the catalogue for data items, and the user input being received from the user to move the user selection indicator to a selected catalogue indicator. A user cataloguing input is received when the user selection indicator is moved to the selected catalogue indicator, and the data item is catalogued in the catalogue location represented by the selected catalogue indicator.
