DEVELOPMENT OF NICKEL-ZINC FERRITES AND METHODS FOR PREPARING SAME USING IRON-OXIDE BYPRODUCTS OF STEEL INDUSTRY

Method for preparing soft cubic ferrites of a general formula M^a (_1-i)M^b_iFe₂O₄ comprising the steps of contacting an iron source a first metal oxide having the general formula M^b_xO_y and a second metal oxide having the general formula Ma _xO_y to form a mixture, wherein the stoichiometric ratio of (M^a+M^b) to iron is in the range from greater than zero to about 2, and wherein M^a and M^b comprise nickel, magnesium, zinc, or a combination thereof; and calcining the mixture at a temperature range of from about 1000 °C to about 1500 °C in a static air atmosphere, to form a soft cubic ferrite of a general formula Ma (_1-i)M^b_iFe₂O₄, wherein the mixture is not subjected to an oxidation step or a reduction step prior to contacting and wherein calcining comprises a single stage heat treatment.
