The invention relates to a method for preparing a derivative of 11-aminoundecanoic acid or 12-aminododecanoic acid, or an ester of the latter, having the formula R-NH-(CH₂)_n-COOR', wherein n has a value of 10 or 11, R is an alkyl, fluoroalkyl, benzyl, or alkylbenzyl grouping, and R' is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl grouping. The method includes: reacting the starting compound, having the formula NH₂-(CH₂)_n-COOR', with aldehyde, having the formula R=O, in a halogenated solvent such as to form an imine compound having formula R=N-(CH₂)_n-COOR'; and reducing the imine compound.
