The invention relates to a device (30) for picking up piling material and/or inserting piling material (24; 26; 28), in particular sheet piles, into the ground, wherein the device (30) comprises: a vibration apparatus (32) for producing vibration at the piling material (24; 26; 28), and a damping apparatus (34) connected to the vibration apparatus (32), wherein the damping apparatus (34) also comprises at least one retainer (10; 20; 22; 40) for retaining and picking up piling material (24; 26; 28), wherein the at least one retainer (10; 20; 22; 40) has at least one magnet (12; 18; 42). The invention further relates to a method for picking up piling material and/or inserting piling material (24; 26; 28) into the ground, comprising the following steps: providing a device (30) for inserting piling material (24; 26; 28) into the ground; orienting the device (30) such that the retainer (10; 20; 22; 40) lies on a surface of the piling material (24; 26; 28); and lifting the piling material (24; 26; 28) by means of the retainer (10; 20; 22; 40).
