Provided is a method of carrying out electrophoresis on samples that contain a guanidinium salt, a potassium salt and/or a chaotropic agent. In the method the pH of the sample is adjusting to a value of 8.0 or higher, and N-Lauroylsarcosine and a reducing agent are added. The buffer components in a gel for a tris/glycine electrophoresis system are adjusted in the method to higher concentrations. Gel electrophoresis may be carried out with a cathode buffer that contains N-Lauroylsarcosine.
