The invention relates to a method for treating primary sludge from municipal or industrial wastewater, according to which the wastewater, containing an incoming load of suspended matter (MES), undergoes a primary treatment (3) yielding primary sludge sent for another treatment operation (7), generally biological treatment, on the one hand; the performance of the primary treatment (3) is varied to cause the digester (5) to work with a flow of sludge to be digested substantially corresponding to the optimal load for the digester, despite the variations in incoming load.
