A method for manufacturing a metal or ceramic component, such as a cutting or forming tool, from at least two distinct powder precursors is disclosed. In one embodiment, the method of manufacture comprises a first mixture comprising a plurality of coated particles, such as Tough-Coated Hard Powder (TCHP) composite particles, made by encapsulating very hard core particles into very rough binders and structural materials , And at least one support powder, such as carbide, typically WC-Co. The mixture is molded into a green body and sintered to functionally separate or form an article having a plurality of elements. Non-limiting embodiments of articles made from the disclosed methods are also disclosed and include drills, mills, cutting tools, forming tools, wire dies, and machine components.
