The present invention relates to the Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) that decomposes heme into carbon dioxide, biliverdin, or Fe^(2+) that plays the very critical role in various biochemical processes. The inventors have tested the protection function of HO-1 against oxidation stress in a SH-SY5Y cell and Parkinson′s disease mouse model. Using the western blotting and optomicroscopic analysis, the inventors have discovered the fact that PEP-1-HO-1 fusion protein can easily penetrate the cell membranes and reach into the neuroblastoma cells called SH-SY5Y and also suppress the creation of reactive oxygen species and the destruction of cells caused by MPP^(+) (1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium) ions. On the contrary, HO-1 proteins failing to penetrate the SH-SY5Y cells failed to reduce the creation of cell toxicity and reactive oxygen species induced by MPP^(+). Also, PEP-1-HO-1 fusion protein injected into the stomach penetrates the blood vessel-brain walls of a mouse. In Parkinson′s disease model, the PEP-1-HO-1 fusion protein showed a good protection effect against toxicity or dopamine neuron′s apoptosis induced by MPP^(+), unlike the HO-1 protein or PEP-1 peptide groups.
