A battery energy storage system capable of emergency operation in case of error of a battery rack according to one aspect of the present invention can perform continuous operation without efficiency degradation of the battery energy storage system in case of the error of the battery rack includes: N number of battery groups including a plurality of battery racks; N number of power conversion modules which charge and discharge the battery group by being connected to the N number of battery groups in a 1:1 manner; a first controller which generates power command value per power conversion module, and controls the power conversion module to charge and discharge the battery group according to the power command value; and a BESS controller which judges whether to separate a target battery rack according to the current charging/discharging power amount of the battery energy storage system, if the target battery rack having a fault exists, and generates a first adjustment command to change the power command value of the power conversion module if it is possible to separate the target battery rack, and transmits the first adjustment command to the first controller. The first controller changes the power command value of the target power conversion module connected to the target battery group so that a current does not flow in the target battery group included in the target battery rack if the first adjustment command is received from the BESS controller.
