PURPOSE: An apparatus for protecting a secondary battery against an overvoltage and a method thereof are provided to prevent the interruption of power by supplying dropped voltage even though the overvoltage is detected. CONSTITUTION: A main relay(210) primarily connects or disconnects a battery module(112) to or from a generator. A sub unit drops the voltages of the generator and the battery module. A controller(240) protects the battery module when the overvoltage is detected. The battery module turns on the main relay in a normal state. The battery module turns off the main relay after the sub unit is operated when the overvoltage is detected.
