The present invention provides a thermo bypass valve and a method for detecting a failure of the thermo bypass valve. The thermo bypass valve comprises: a valve body formed to communicate with an inlet passage, a discharge passage, and a bypass passage respective in an inner space so that a fluid flowing from the outside may be discharged or bypassed via an inner space; a piston assembly arranged in the inner space of the valve body to allow the inlet passage to selectively communicate with the discharge passage or the bypass passage when moving in a linear displacement by expansion or constriction of a heat expanding material according to the temperature of the fluid by accommodating the heat expanding material internally; and an elastic member arranged between the piston assembly and the inner surface of the valve body to allow the inlet passage to communicate with the bypass passage.;COPYRIGHT KIPO 2015
