Disclosed are an amplify-and-forward relay method for multi-antenna / carrier systems and an apparatus thereof. The present invention provides a method for designing a hybrid beamformer in a relay network which comprises the steps of: setting up an optimal beamformer matrix which assumes full complexity RF chains as many as the number of antennas within a relay network environment in which an amplify-and-forward (AF) relay is placed between a transmitter and a receiver; and designing a transmission RF beam, a reception RF beam, and a baseband signal processing matrix using the optimal beamformer matrix.
