FIELD: metallurgy.SUBSTANCE: invention relates to metallurgy. Proposed process comprises charge preparation at batching and mixing of zirconium-bearing oxide material. The latter includes zirconium dioxide, mix of the latter with refractory metal oxides, zirconium-bearing slag from production of zirconium ferrosilicon or zirconium ferroaluminium, with aluminium and fluxing additive. The latter can be the mix of alkali-earth metals and their fluorides, or mix of alkali-earth metal oxides and their fluorides, or mix of alkali-earth metals, their oxides and fluorides. Here, the ratio between zirconium dioxide, aluminium and alkali-earth metal and/or alkali-earth metal oxide, alkali-earth metal fluoride makes 1:(0.4-1.4):(0.18-0.6):(0.07-0.2) by weight. Then, said charge is subjected to reducing melting in air or neutral atmosphere at 1450-1750°C in resistance, induction or arc furnaces.
