An optical system (1) for covering a luminous means of a spotlight in its beam direction comprises a light collector (2), a screen and a deflection means (4). In this case, the deflecting means (4) is arranged between the light collector (2) and the screen such that light collected by the light collector (2) can be diverted into the screen. The screen has a plurality of coupling-out units (31), with which the deflecting means (4) deflected into the screen light in a radiation direction (11) of the optical system (1) is deflected. The optical system according to the invention makes it possible, on the one hand, to define and generate a preferred light distribution curve (LVK) with relative precision and, on the other hand, to achieve uniform, pleasant, surface illumination at the same time. Multiple shadowing can be avoided and the light pressure can be adjusted.
