A method, comprising: providing a fuel cell bipolar plate substrate (30) having a first side (31) having a reaction gas flow field defined therein by a plurality of lands (32) and at least one channel (34 ), a container (12) is provided from which a sponge (20), a positive electrode (22) and an electrolyte solution (24) are received, the sponge (20) having a surface containing a plurality of therein defined raised features (46) constructed and arranged so that the raised features (46) are in contact with a plurality of first portions (42) of the lands (32) of the substrate (30) for depositing an electrically conductive coating thereon wherein a plurality of second portions (44) of the lands (32) do not contact the sponge (20), and the electrically conductive coating selectively contacts the plurality of first portions (42) of the lands (32) is galvanized by an electrical voltage between the positive electrode (22) and the substrate (30) is applied, wherein the plurality of second portions (44) of the webs (32) left uncovered by the electrically conductive coating.
