Energy saving method for network routing protocol for network elements

摘要

Methods and apparatus relating to network routing routing protocols for supporting energy savings in network elements. A network topology with a most commonly used connection path for a computer network is explored using a routing protocol such as a spanning tree, a link state, or a distance vector routing protocol. With regard to the network topology with a most frequently used connection path, links are identified as candidates for power management, and a power state of the connection and associated network ports is managed to conserve power under current connection conditions such as low utilization. Energy state change conditions of the connection are detected and, in response thereto, a corresponding change in the power state of a connection is made by changing the power state of the network ports at the ends of the connection. To the energy state changes include z. a. placing a connection in a reduced power state, off-line connection, and reactivation of a connection.
