A method of determining a short-term driving index and a system of shift control using the method are disclosed which accurately reproduce the driver's intention with respect to the shift by determining a short-term driving index. The method may include detecting (S100) input variables, determining (S110) whether the short term driving tendency determination condition is satisfied, calculating (S120, S130, S140) tendencies and output membership function values according to a plurality of fuzzy rules based on the input variables, when the determination condition of the short term driving tendency is satisfied, and determining (S150) a short term driving trend index based on the trends and the output membership function values based on the plurality of fuzzy rules.
