One aspect of the invention relates to a method for restarting a motor vehicle after unforeseen stops in an automated parking operation by means of a parking assistance system with automated longitudinal and transverse guidance. According to the method, in the case of stopping the vehicle, a restart of the vehicle is decided in the previous direction of travel prevailing before the vehicle is stopped. The decision is made in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the invention as a function of the remaining travel path from the current position to the next in the previous direction of travel planned stopping point of the trajectory. A stopping point of the trajectory may be, for example, a reversal point or the parking end position. If the decision is positive, the vehicle will restart in the previous direction of travel. If the decision is negative, the vehicle restarts against the previous direction of travel.
