A phononic device is provided which is suitable for damping mechanical vibrations as well as acoustic vibrations propagating through a medium. By periodically placing regions of a material into a matrix that differ in terms of the ratio of the longitudinal velocity of sound (CL) and the transverse velocity of sound (CT) between the regions and the matrix of equal to or greater than 2.0 and 40 respectively, a significant vibration damping is achieved.
