The invention relates to a method for ultrasonic testing according to the pulse-echo method, and to an arrangement for carrying out such a method. By means of an ultrasound transducer (6), an ultrasonic pulse (5) is obliquely insonified into a pick-up surface (7) of a test object (10). Subsequently, an echo signal (22) is received from the test object (10). This is done either via the ultrasonic transducer (6), which has sent out the ultrasonic pulse (5), or with another. The temporal amplitude profile (20) of the echo signal (22) is evaluated in a predetermined error expectation time interval (26). The step of evaluating includes amplifying the amplitude (A) and / or lowering a threshold value (26) at least in a section (30) of the amplitude profile (20). For example, the amplitude (A) of the received echo signal (22) is then compared with the predetermined threshold value (26).
