A method for simulating alumina defects in aluminum castings comprises determining the surface area of a free surface for a plurality of aluminum particles in an aluminum melt, storing the surface area of the free surface for each aluminum particle, and changing the surface area of the free surface during filling a casting mold is tracked and that the total surface area of incorporated or surface oxide films is calculated based on the change in surface area of the free surface during filling of the mold. The method may further include coupling a scalar variable method and a discrete particle method to simulate alumina defects in aluminum castings.
