An air pressure interface (LD interface) for a spectrometer includes a wall for separating an ionization chamber from a pressure-reduced region of the spectrometer, an ion inlet defining an ion path from the ionization chamber to the pressure-reduced region, and a passageway defining a gas path from the Ionization defined to a lying outside the reduced pressure region gas outlet. The passage may have a larger gas conductance than the ion inlet, so that most of the gas flows into the passage and not into the ion inlet.
