Secure payment method and system for a voice telephony based payment system implemented over a telecommunications network

The method comprising the steps of: establishing a network voice connection 0 between a first party and a second party for initiating a payment transaction; identifying a unique call identifier (CLI) of the first party for the connection and/or recording at least part of a voice signal generated by the first party over the connection; authenticating the unique call identifier against one or more registered unique call identifier(s) associated with the first party and/or authenticating the voice signal against pre-determined voice biometric data of said first party; authenticating the identity of the first party if the unique call identifier and the voice signal authentication succeeds. The invention enables multi-factor security authentication to be implemented in remote payment systems that involve one or more elements of voice telephony where sensitive information is passed from one party to another as a voice signal over the telephone network. The invention finds particular application where the payment transaction is a card based payment transaction. Card-Not-Present transactions may be processed with multi-factor authentication where voice telephony is used in the payment cycle. This has particular advantage in improving fraud detection when a fraudulent remote payment transaction is being attempted over the telephone network.
