A method and device are disclosed for encapsulating multi-layer partitioned timed media data comprising timed samples encoded into first and second layers (e.g. base and enhancement layers in scalable video coding, SVC), the timed samples comprising at least one subsample(s) (e.g. tiles, regions of interest, ROI) encoded into one of the first and the second layer. After having obtained subsamples from the samples, a track comprising obtained subsamples is created and descriptive metadata associated with the created track is generated, comprising a descriptor signaling a dependency link between the obtained subsamples and other subsamples, describing: an intra-layer dependency if obtained subsamples and the other subsamples belong to the same layer; and an inter-layer dependency if obtained and other subsamples belong to different layers. A method (Figure 15) may comprise encoding video data into network abstraction layer (NAL) units; creating a non-playable tile track containing sub sample information (e.g. NAL units) for each tile and indicating dependent layers; creating a playable base track per layer containing extractors to dependent layers, common tile data and tile track extractors; encapsulated file generation; and serving of data to client devices.
