Preparing a plastic comprises reacting 1,6-hexanediol with dicarboxylic acids or diisocyanates in the presence of at least one catalyst, where the 1,6-hexanediol is a 1,6-hexanediol which has, after its preparation by hydrogenation, been subjected to at least one distillation in which the molar ratio of oxygen to 1,6-hexanediol is less than 1:100 and comprises = 5 ppm of catalytically active components and has an aldehyde content of less than 500 ppm. Independent claims are included for: (1) preparing 1,6-hexanediol, comprising preparing a mixture comprising 1,6-hexanediol, removing catalytically active components to a residual content of = 5 ppm, and distillating the mixture; and (2) the 1,6-hexanediol obtained by the process.
