A method and a system for determining the state of a vehicle equipped with a thermal engine and for controlling actuation of an on-board electronic device are described. An inertial sensor is arranged for detecting a variable representative of the vibrations of the thermal engine of the vehicle caused by its operation. An associated processing unit is arranged for determining a state of actuation of the engine depending on the values of the variable detected by the inertial sensor and issuing a command signal for activation or deactivation, respectively, of the on-board device depending on the determined state of actuation of the engine.
