method implemented by computer, for determining a representative index of sympatho vagal activity of an individual or animal competition, said method comprising the steps of:- receiving (101) a sequence comprising a plurality of steps, measures of r & r, and the time interval between two consecutive heart beats of the individual.- build (105), a first sub sequence of the positive differences between two consecutive values of the said sequence is received.- build (106) and a second sub sequence of the absolute values of the differences between two consecutive negative values of the sequence is received.- calculate (107) an index equal to a value representative of the comparison between the result of a statistical function applied to the values of the first sub sequence and the result of the statistical function applied to the values of the second sub sequence.
