A multi-source energy storage system is described including a first energy storage system 110, a second energy storage system 120, and a second DC/DC converter 122 and controller 150. The first energy storage system 110 can be coupled to an electrical load 160. The second DC/DC converter 122 and controller 150 can be coupled between at least one of the following: a second energy storage system 120 and a first energy storage system 110 or electrical load 160. The controller settings control the first and second energy storage systems 110,120 and the second DC/DC converter 122 runs in both precharge mode and normal mode. In the precharge mode, the first energy storage system 110 charges the second energy storage system 120 via the second DC/DC converter 122. In normal mode, the second energy storage is coupled to the electrical load 160 via the second DC/DC converter 122. A method for supplying power to an electrical load from multiple energy storage systems is provided.
