The invention relates to a document with a non-volatile memory area for storing a secret identifier, wherein the identifier comprises a first n-digit character string from a pre-defined character set, with random number generator means for selecting at least one character from the predefined character set for substituting at least one character of said first character string such that this substitution defines a second n-digit character string, with a volatile memory area for storing the at least one selected character, with a display device for displaying the at least one selected character, with input means for inputting a third character string, with processor means to authenticate the user with regard to the document, wherein the processor means are designed to access the non-volatile memory area and the volatile memory area in order to read the second character string and to check for a match between the second and third character strings so as to authenticate the user.
