The invention relates to a belt dryer with a drying area (01) and with a cooling chamber (16). The drying area (01) has multiple drying chambers (12; 13; 14) arranged one behind the other, and the cooling chamber (16) is arranged downstream of the last drying chamber (14). Air which is heated in the cooling chamber (16) is at least partly supplied to at least one of the drying chambers (12; 13; 14) arranged upstream of the cooling chamber (16) by means of an exhaust air channel (21). At least one part of the exhaust air which is to be discharged from one of the drying chambers (13; 14) via an exhaust air channel (28; 31) is supplied to the drying chamber (12; 13) arranged immediately upstream of the drying chamber (13; 14) in question, and the exhaust air which is heated in the drying chamber (14) arranged immediately upstream of the cooling chamber (16) is introduced into the drying chamber (13) arranged immediately upstream of said drying chamber (14) via a separate connecting channel (28). The separate connecting channel (28) is designed as a return channel which is connected solely to the drying chamber (14) arranged immediately upstream of the cooling chamber (16) and to the drying chamber (13) arranged upstream of said drying chamber (14).
