Merging multiple heterogeneous file systems into a single unified file system

A method for exposing a single file system (unified file system) based on merging more than one file systems with different features and attributes (sub file systems). The features and attributes supported by the resulting unified file system are the least common denominator of the features of the sub file systems. During the mount of the unified file system all the sub file systems are queried for supported features and attributes. Based on the result the unified file system is constructed to support only functions and attributes that are supported across all sub file systems. The feature set of the unified file system is dynamic and is constructed every mount.
