The present invention relates to the synthesis of chromanones or chromans in a stereospecific state when viewed from the 2-position in the chromanone ring or chroman ring. It has been found that this synthesis is particularly possible in the presence of certain types of chiral compounds of the formula and in the presence of at least one phenol or thiophenol.
