A packaging material comprising an oxygen barrier polymer film, the film comprising the following steps: a) oxidizing the cellulose fibers to finally obtain crosslinked cellulose; and b) fibrils with a width in the range of 1 nm to 150 nm. To obtain a packaging material comprising a polymer obtained by a process comprising homogenizing the product of step a). Corresponding uses are also provided.
