Electrosurgical system including gripping means having a switchable electrode and a snare

The electrosurgical system has gripping means and a snare, each including an electrode. The gripping means has a first electrode connectable to a first output of the energy source. The snare has a second electrode connectable to a second output of the energy source. The first and second electrodes are connected to an energy source, and the gripping means and the snare operate as a bipolar system. By gripping the tissue with the jaws of the gripping means, the current path between the electrode on the snare and the electrode on the gripping means is relatively short. Thus, the system operates like a bipolar electrosurgical system. Therefore, the applied energy is concentrated in a small area, and damage to the surrounding tissue can be minimized. Also, energy suitable for coagulating the cut portion of the stalk of ablated tissue can be easily applied by the bipolar electrosurgical system.
