The present invention provides a family of fluorescent compounds. The compounds are substituted silaxanthenium compounds that can be chemically linked to one or more biomolecules, such as proteins, nucleic acids, and therapeutic small molecules. The compounds can be used for imaging in various medical, biological and diagnostic applications. Such dyes are particularly useful in in vitro, in vivo and ex vivo imaging applications. In one embodiment, the present invention provides a family of fluorescent 9-substituted 3,6-diamino 10-silaxanthenium fluorescent dyes that have red and near infrared absorption and emission wavelengths.
