The base station antenna beam pattern is refined when communicating with multiple aircraft so that interference from the base station to adjacent beams is reduced. The method includes receiving a position fix from each of a number of aircraft. The method also includes receiving each attitude of the aircraft and receiving a measurement of a pilot signal from each of the aircraft. The pilot signal is transmitted by the base station. The method also includes adjusting the amplitude and phase of the signal by driving at least one antenna transmission element to refine the beam pattern. The adjustment is based at least in part on each attitude, position determination, and pilot measurement of the aircraft.
