PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle travel control method and a vehicle travel control device capable of preventing frequent attempts to start an engine and connect the engine to a clutch to improve fuel economy, and improving vehicle driving performance by making variable the timing of starting the engine and connecting the engine to the clutch in response to the behavior of a motor rotating speed.SOLUTION: The present invention comprises: a change-rate computing step of computing a change rate of a motor rotating speed; a reference-rotating-speed computing step of making variable a first reference rotating speed set to connect an engine to a clutch in response to the computed change rate of the motor rotating speed, and computing a new second reference rotating speed for connecting the engine to the clutch; and a travel-mode controlling step of selecting engine start and connection between the engine and the clutch and determining a vehicle travel mode in response to whether the motor rotating speed reaches the second reference rotating speed.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 4
